Holy Mackerel Cakes

Mackerel is high in protein and calcium. The bones are left in the mackerel when it is canned, but they are very soft, and wont harm your dog.

15 oz can mackerel
1/2 cup whole grain bread crumbs
1 tsp garlic powder (not garlic salt)
1 tbsp minced green pepper
2 tbsp vegetable oil or peanut oil
1 egg, well beaten

Preheat oven to 350 F. Mash mackerel thoroughly. Add the rest of the ingredients and mix very well. Shape into small balls, and place on a greased cookie sheet. Using a fork, press each ball slightly to flatten it out. Bake about 20 minutes. Flip cakes and bake another 5 to brown them on both sides, and dry them out just slightly. Cool completely and store in an airtight container in your refrigerator.

Good luck everyone, here's hoping your pups love them!!

Todays Recipe

Doggy Stew

4 cups chicken, fish, or lean ground meat (about 4 lbs)
1 cup of zucchini or other fresh vegetable, finely chopped
1 cup string beans, cut up
1/2 cup white potato, cut up
1/2 cup yam or sweet potato
4 cups of water

Combine all ingredients in a slow cooker. Place on the lowest setting, and let it cook all day while your at work or while you are sleeping. Place in the refrigerator to cool, skim off any fat that accumulates on the top. Mix together well and keep refrigerated or freeze in daily serving sizes.

You can mix and match vegetables according to what's on sale at the grocery store or farmers market, or whats available in your own garden. Most dogs seem to love carrots, summer squash, green beans, and tomato. Have fun with this recipe and I hope that your dogs enjoy it.

Recipe Day - Tasty Meatballs

Tasty Meatballs

You can double or triple this recipe, depending on your dogs appetite, and freeze ant leftovers if there are any.

1/2 pound ground beef
1 carrot, finely grated
1/4 cup of any seasonal vegetable, grated
1 Tablespoon grated cheese (your dog's favourite)
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (powder, not salt)
1/2 cup of whole wheat bread crumbs (make a piece of overdone toast and crumble it)
1 egg, beaten
1 tablespoon tomato paste

Combine all ingredients and mix well. Roll into small meatballs and place on a lightly greased cookie sheet. Bake in a preheated 350 degree oven until meatballs are brown and firm (about 15 minutes). Cool completely, and store in an airtight container in the fridge.

You can replace the ground beef with ground pork, lamb, chicken or turkey. You can also replace 1/2 the breadcrumbs with ground flax for an added health kick.

Enjoy!
