Well this is Hoover, our new boy, isn't he beautiful? Born on March 20th in this pic he was only 4 weeks and 1 day old but he was all ready a beauty. I was never given the opportunity to choose a puppy from a whole litter before. Wow what a difficult decision, all that we knew for sure was that we wanted a boy. Not that I don't like little lady doggies just I all ready have one. Pebbles my now 7 year old Pekingese who is VERY territorial, and wouldn't appreciate another female moving in on HER domain. She won't enjoy Hoovers company either I am sure but a boy, at least will be submissive to her so all should work out in the long run. Corky my 12 year old Pekingese (who actually belonged to my Mom until he was 8, and she passed away) likely won't care one way or the other as to a boy or a girl or if another dog moves in or not. He is very set in his ways and as long as Hoover eats from "his own" dish not Corkys they should get along swell.
But anyway, like I was saying I have never got to choose a pup from a litter before. Pebbles was from a littler of 3, 2 were white and then there was her, so the choice for me was a no brainer. I made the choice over the phone without even seeing her first. This time there were 10 little tails wiggling, all 10 squirmy bodies wanting to be picked up and cuddled, I secretly wanted them all. I was stuck between 2 boys, Hoover and another as I liked the shape of the other little guys head, a little large for his body making him look like a St. Bernard. But Hoover kinda chose us. I was picking them up one by one and putting them back. I would put one back to the left and pick up the next one up in the line. I soon found that I had picked up the same little boy a good 10 times. Well the decision was made. He has a big spot on the top of his head, making him different from the rest of his siblings. I don't know whether that spot will stay forever or disappear as he matures? Only time will tell. In the litter there were 8 tri-colours, and 2 lemon and whites. I would have loved one of the lemon pups but they were both girls. Perhaps one day in a few years we will acquire another red and white, or a lemon and white. But this time a tri-colour boy for us. Should hopefully be a little easier on our hearts for now anyway.
Now on to the name "HOOVER" well I has always preferred 2 syllable names, and have also heard that dogs respond better to the 2 syllables. So there was a start. I came across the name Hoover on a rescue site that I frequent and thought what a beautiful name for a Basset. So there it was, his name, I was teased a bit, that he should be called "Dyson", or "Electro lux", or even "Kenmore". Big meanies!! His name will suit him just fine, I am sure of it. Only 10 more days till we go and get him, although I got an email that he is ready to go now. But plans were made weeks ago to get him on the 23rd and Husband is out of town for the weekend, so Hoover will have to wait for the 10 days, I am sure that he will be much happier there with all his siblings, rather than here with us anyway. Although if he only knew how spoiled he is to be!! We must all be patient.
